It’s easier than ever to capture those special moments that we never want to forget. We have cameras in our pockets and filters at our fingertips. So why do we need cameras? Why should we pay photographers hundreds, even thousands, of dollars to do what “everyone can do”?
Smartphones have come along away from the grainy, smaller-than-your-thumb sized images, but they still don’t produce the quality of photos that DSLR cameras do. The image below is an example (zoomed in) of a photo I took in Jamaica with my camera compared to one I took with my iPhone in the same location on the same day.
There’s a difference, right? DSLR cameras produce higher resolution photos. All digital images are made up of tiny colored squares that are arranged to create the image that we take.
The more tiny squares that make up an image, the clearer the picture is going to be. A typical image from a camera has 300 dots per inch (dpi), and smartphones usually produce images with 72 dpi. When we go to print these images, the pictures taken with a camera are more likely to print clearly because of the increased quality. I think we can all agree that when it comes to important life events such as weddings, the birth of a child or a graduation, we want to have crisp, clear images that we can hold on to for years to come.
So, why should we pay photographers to take those shots instead of spending a few hundred dollars to buy a camera and do it ourself? That’s a blog for a different day. I will say, however, that framing and creativity play a large role in capturing compelling images.
